Match Round 11

Tigers targeting Christmas

Leicester will be intent on securing a bonus-point victory when they entertain struggling Sale Sharks at Welford Road on Monday.

After a defeat and draw against Perpignan home and away in the Heineken Cup, the Tigers will be anxious to return to domestic action where they have won their last three matches.

Sale have lost their last four in all competitions and will be under new stewardship after head coach Mike Brewer was abruptly sacked prior to Christmas. Leicester should be confident securing a five-pointer at home to aid their pursuit of Northampton at the top of the Premiership table.

Sale are third from bottom in the standings and could sink into the bottom two if Newcastle beat Leeds at Kingston Park.

Leicester - Player to Watch: Manu Tuilagi has been drafted into midfield and the giant youngster will line up in opposition to brother Andy. There will likely be a few family scores to settle as another Tuilagi, Alesana, is on the Leicester wing.

Leicester - Team News: There is a new look to the home side due to a couple of injuries and enforced rest for England players. Toby Flood and Jordan Crane are carrying knocks, meaning that Jeremy Staunton returns at fly-half and Thomas Waldrom shifts back to No.8. Ben Youngs, Dan Cole and George Chuter are all rested as James Grindal, Rob Hawkins and Martin Castrogiovanni start as a result.

Sale - Player to Watch: Mark Cueto will make his 150th appearance for the Sharks and after another difficult week his experience will be vital.

Sale - Team News: Nick Macleod deputises for Charlie Hodgson at fly-half and is joined at halfback by the experienced Dwayne Peel. Andrew Sheridan misses out with a back problem, although Chris Jones is fit to start his first game of the season in the second-row.

Match scheduled:
27-12-2010 from15:00GMT
Aviva Premiership

Falcons aiming to extend safety net

The bottom two clash at Kinston Park on Monday with Leeds desperate for a boost in their pursuit of the rest going into the New Year.

Originally fixed for Boxing Day, this clash will now go ahead on Monday, December 27 with Leeds seven points behind Newcastle at the foot of the table and needing to start picking up victories if they are to reel-in those ahead of them in the standings. And they may not get a better chance, with the Falcons having one just once in their last seven Aviva Premiership outings.

The Falcons' last home game was moved to Galashiels in Scotland, when they grabbed a last-gasp victory over Exeter in the Amlin Challenge Cup. And the continued freezing conditions at Kingston Park led to this match being delayed by 24 hours to Monday afternoon.

Newcastle - Player to Watch: Alan Tait will be hoping new signing Euan Murray can have an impact up front after joining from Northampton. At his best, the Scotland and Lions prop is a destructive scrummager and the struggling Falcons need tome impetus.

Newcastle - Team News: The Boxing Day postponement frees up Euan Murray to make his Falcons debut in the front row, while Micky Young returns to the side after a spell on the sideline and Jason Spice starts on the bench.

Leeds - Player to Watch: Hendrie Fourie's ball winning skills will be key for Neil Back's men if they are secure their first win of the season against their closest rivals at the foot of the table..

Leeds - Team News: Steve Thompson and Hendrie Fourie return to the Leeds fold, Gareth Hardy and Phil Swainston will start in the front row alongside England hooker Thompson whilst Lachlan MacKay starts at fly-half and Ceiron Thomas reverts to full back.

Key Battle: Relegation battles are rarely pretty and it will be the coolest scrum-half who can get their side moving. Warren Fury and Micky Young will do battle for control of the game, their packs will help but their backlines will thank them for clean ball.

Irish eye Twickenham turnaround

London Irish will hope to end their worst run since 2002 when they face Harlequins at Twickenham on Monday.

Irish have slumped to seven successive defeats in all competitions and their loss of form has hit their domestic hopes the most. Having led the standings earlier in the season they are now down to fourth and in danger of slipping out of the play-off places. But they will hope the eapansive turf of Twickenham will suit their express widemen.

Harlequins were boosted during the week with Tom Guest, Joe Marler and James Johnston all committing their futures to the club and recently claimed back-to-back wins over Connacht to keep their Amlin Challenge Cup bid alive. They will be optimistic of maintaining that promising form.

Harlequins - Player to Watch: Ugo Monye has not featured for Quins since September because of injury but he has been cleared to start at Twickenham and it will be fascinating to see how he fares on his return to the starting line-up with the Six Nations looming large on the horizon.

Harlequins - Team News: Monye's return on the left wing is a timely one as Gonzalo Camacho suffered an injury in last weekend's win over Connacht. Tom Guest also picked up a knock in Galway, to his ankle, and that results in a start for Will Skinner in the back-row. Elsewhere, George Robson is recalled to the second-row, while the aforementioned Marler will team up with Joe Gray and Johnston in the front row.

London Irish - Player to Watch: Faan Rautenbach has proven a fine servant for the Exiles since arriving at the Madejski Stadium five years ago and the South African will be hoping to mark his 100th appearance for the club with a stellar performance.

London Irish - Team News: Topsy Ojo returns to the Irish starting XV, taking the place of Jonathan Joseph on the left wing, while George Stowers gets the nod at No.8 ahead of Chris Hala'ufia.

Saracens v London Wasps Aviva Premiership Wembley Stadium, London 26 December 2010 (TV Programs)

Aviva Premiership - Wembley
26 December 2010
14:45 GMT, 14:45 Local

Saracens v London Wasps Live

Henson set for Sarries bow

The Wembley stage is set on Sunday for the much-anticipated return to rugby of Gavin Henson but there will be far more at stake for both Saracens and Wasps.

Wembley has proved to be a happy hunting ground for Sarries in the past, having won all three of their previous Premiership games there, and victory over Racing Metro in Paris on Friday will have given them confidence of performing well on the big stage once again.

However, Wasps are on a charge. They have won their last six fixtures and won five of their last six in the Aviva Premiership. And after much speculation earlier in the season that Henson's ultimate destination would be Adams Park, the likes of Dave Walder and Riki Fltuey will be out to overshadow the Welshman's return.

Saracens - Player to Watch: It's been hard to avoid Gavin Henson in recent weeks but we are finally about to see if the Welsh centre can hit the ground running after almost two years away from the game. He's been named on the bench and you're forgiven for spending plenty of time starting at the replacements' bench.

Saracens - Team News: Deon Carstens, Carlos Nieto, Ernst Joubert and captain Steve Borthwick all return to the starting line-up, while a fit again Alex Goode joins Henson on the bench.

Wasps - Player to Watch:With a new contract under his arm, Joe Simpson can now focus on winning a place in the England squad and where better to start his own campaign but on the Wembley turf. The scrum-half needs to get his side ticking, with ball carriers like Andy Powell and Joe Worsely key to their gameplan.

Wasps - Team News: Andy Powell returns after missing Wasps' win over the Dragons with a calf injury. Will Matthews returns to the bench, where the Londoners welcome Tim Payne back after a knee injury.

Ospreys v Scarlets Rugby Magners League 2010 Sun, 26 (TV Programs)

Venue: Liberty Stadium
Date: Sunday, 26 December
Kick-off: 16:10 GMT
Rugby Magners League 2010

The Ospreys have made just one change for the west Wales Magners league derby against the Scarlets on Boxing Day.

Ospreys v Scarlets Live

http://rugbyworldcuplive2011.blogspot.com

Prop Duncan Jones replaces Paul James but the hosts are without Wales pair Lee Byrne (thumb) and Shane Williams (Shoulder) for the sell-out showdown.

Captain Matthew Rees returns from a groin injury to lead the Scarlets.

Wales team-mate centre Jonathan Davies and Aussie back-rower David Lyons come back from ankle and shoulder injuries to take their place on the bench.

Scott Johnson's Ospreys bid to extend their winning run against their nearest neighbours to six games in the Boxing Day sell-out.

The two Welsh regions prepare for their Boxing Day bonanza following positive results in the Heineken Cup as both are hopeful of qualifying for the knock-out stages in Europe.

And Ospreys' pack was universally praised following their powerful demolition of Irish giants Munster in the Heineken Cup while their front row was hailed as "one of the best in Europe."

But Johnson has called in Wales loose-head Duncan Jones and dropped James to the replacements bench for their clash with their closest rivals.

The Scarlets are second in the Magners League and have won four of their last five away games while the fourth-placed Ospreys have lost just once at home this term - also against Welsh rivals in a 21-16 defeat by the Dragons.

So as the Magners League top two try-scorers collide, Ospreys coach Sean Holley admits the Scarlets are the "form team."

"They are on fire in terms of their attacking game," said Holley.

"They have young talent full of exuberance and they are going to come up against a pretty physical and determined Ospreys outfit who have a very proud home record.

"It will be a clash of two form Welsh team and it will be a real cracker and this time of year brings out the best in both the fans and players alike so we can expect a good contest.

"I know we have enjoyed the upper hand in recent games against them but the Scarlets are playing well, with a lot of confidence, bringing some players through are in a rich vein of form and scoring a lot of tries.

"The Scarlets always challenge us at the Liberty Stadium and raise their game to play us so with a 20,000 full house it should be a great occasion."

The Magners League champions, who have lost just one of their last seven league games, have only lost twice at the Liberty Stadium to the Scarlets.

But the Llanelli region are without Wales internationals fly-half Stephen Jones (knee) and wing George North (shoulder) as well as their three frontline tight-head props.

Peter Edwards, Deacon Manu (both broken arms) and Rhys Thomas (broken leg) are out as is wing Andy Fenby (groin), second row Lou Reed (leg) and flanker Dafydd Jones (shoulder).

"With the current number of internationals in their squad and the fact they are playing at home will make them firm favourites," said Scarlets coach Nigel Davies.

"But I think that is irrelevant in a local derby."

The sub-plot to this local derby is the personal duels between international rivals as Wales' number one hooker Rees is set to go toe-to-toe with his Welsh deputy Richard Hibbard.

And Dan Biggar and Rhys Priestland will go head-to-head in the battle of number tens that are next in line to Wales regular Stephen Jones.

Ospreys: Barry Davies; Nikki Walker; Tommy Bowe, James Hook; Richard Fussell; Dan Biggar, Mike Phillips; Duncan Jones, Richard Hibbard, Adam Jones, Ryan Jones, Alun Wyn Jones, Jerry Collins, Marty Holah, Jonathan Thomas
Replacements: Huw Bennett, Paul James, Craig Mitchell, Ian Evans, Justin Tipuric, Jamie Nutbrown, Andrew Bishop, Sonny Parker

Replacements: Ken Owens Rhodri Jones, Phil John, Rob McCusker, David Lyons, Tavis Knoyle, Jonathan Davies, Lee Williams

Treviso win bragging rights

Treviso denied Aironi a first ever Magners League win in the first Italian derby in the competition's history thanks to a hard-fought 15-10 win.

The newly formed region looked like they might be on their way to a maiden league win - to add to their Heineken Cup shock against Biarritz - as they led midway through the second half. But the boot of scrum-half Toby Botes saw them home.

Aironi will have another crack at the whip - this time at home - on New Year's Eve, but they will rue not taking their opportunity at winning their first league game after their number 9, Tito Tebaldi kicked a 48th minute penalty. Tebaldi scored all of his side's points, with a first-half try, conversion and that penalty.

Treviso led at the break through two Botes penalties and a Chris Burton drop-goal. And, having gone behind, the more experienced Treviso gathered themselves together and led by Botes they worked themselves into a position to win the game. He regained the lead for his side on 61 minutes, before an injury time effort made the game safe.
